With the weather changing and summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to get fit with your dog! Sometimes it can be difficult to motivate yourself to get out there and be active. A dog can be the perfect workout buddy and is always ready to go! Here are some fun workouts you can do with your pup to keep you both active and healthy:
Take a Walk
This one may seem a bit obvious, but getting up and going for a brisk morning walk can do wonders for your cardiovascular health and weight management. To add a little more umph to your routine, try taking it in intervals. Alternate between walking for 1 minute and jogging for 1 minute to really get your metabolism going.
Fetch with a Twist
Try playing fetch with your pooch, but not in the traditional sense. Assume sit-up position, do a sit-up and when you get to the top throw your dog’s toy/stick. Add in some oblique sit-ups until the toy is returned and then repeat. This is a great way to work on your abs while tiring out your pup!
With your dog’s favorite toy, try this squatting exercise. Stand with your feet shoulder length apart, squat down and tap your dog on his nose with his/her toy. As you stand up, lift the toy above your head (depending on your dogs size) and your pup will jump for it!
Go for a Hike
Your dog loves a good adventure almost as much as you do! Go for a hike and better yet, find a great off-leash location to let your dog lead you through the trails.
Revisit your childhood and play an exhilarating game of tag with your dog. Tag him/her and run away, letting them chase you. The sprinting, darting and dodging is sure to give you a great workout, not to mention be loads of fun!
Head out to your backyard or an open park and try out this fun game. Pick your dog’s favorite toy/ball/stick and play fetch. Only this time race your dog and try to beat them to the item. Short sprints are a great way to get your heart rate up!
Climbing stairs can be a great way to tone your legs and get both you and your pup going. Grab a leash, find a set of stairs, and walk/run up and down them with your furry friend.
Training your dog on an agility course is a great workout for the both of you. You will have to run alongside the obstacles and encourage your dog to jump over, climb up and run through obstacles. Use this handy online tool to find an agility club, training schools, and courses in your area.
Have you ever tried dancing with your dog? You may both love it! Pick up their paws, turn on some tunes and get down! You will be having a blast and burning calories in no time.
Dust off your bike and head around the block. Your dog will love running along beside you. For longer rides be sure to keep in mind that your dog is running while you are biking, so it may be a bit strenuous on them. Start out with shorter rides and build your way up. Medium to large dogs are much better suited for keeping up with you on a bike than smaller dogs.
Rising in popularity, some studios are starting to offer doga. Enroll in a class and get centered with your best pup! If you can’t find a class nearby or just can’t wait, there are several online videos you can look to for guidance.
Please keep in mind that as summer nears and the days heat up, your pooch may overheat! Dogs are unable to cool themselves as quickly as we are, so a long run outside in the sun may leave your dog completely exhausted and dehydrated!
Don’t forget to keep yourself cool and hydrated as well! A Svelte organic protein shake is a great way to refuel after a workout and keep yourself refreshed and full! If it is an especially hot day, try freezing your Svelte into delicious Sveltesicles!
